BrightLife At The Cenny Tuesdays in January

Start off your New Year in the best possible way by joining us in The Cenny for BrightLife on Tuesdays  from 2pm – 5pm.

While most of us may have rang in 2017 with friends and family (and a tipple or two!), not everybody is in that situation and we at the Centurion Pub know that this can be a particularly difficult time of year for some of our older residents and community members.

We are continuing our partnership with BrightLife into 2017 and following on from our first successful afternoon a few weeks ago, we are delighted to welcome you back on Tuesday 3rd January for what we hope will be another great few hours of fun and friendship.

So if you, or anybody you know, would like to come and join us, our door is open and we are waiting to welcome you in.

Kids Christmas Party December 18th

Our jam-packed calendar of Christmas events continues as we tell you all about the The Centurion Kids Party which will be on Sunday 18th December 2016 from 2pm – 5pm.

Complete with a disco, games, food and even a very special visit from Father Christmas himself, this is going to be a great afternoon for the youngest Vicars Cross residents.

In order to ensure that Santa brings enough gifts and his elves produce enough food for all those in attendance, we have had to make this a ticketed event.

Tickets are £1 per child and are VERY limited (75 children in total) and that’s to make sure that everybody has fun but safe time in The Cenny. Unlike the halloween party, we don’t imagine that too many of you will fancy standing around outside in the cold in the middle of December so we need to manage numbers inside the pub.

Tickets are available from behind the bar and you MUST bring your ticket with you on the day as you will need it to get your children’s food and their gift from Mr Claus.

We know it’s going to be a great afternoon and that the kids will love it so make sure you don’t miss out.

Get to the Cenny to get your tickets asap as this is one of the most popular events on the calendar and we’d hate to see you disappointed!

Celebrate The Centurion’s 50th Birthday This Saturday

50th Birthday Party – Saturday 10th December – From 7pm

It has been 50 years since our beloved local pub, The Centurion, first opened it’s doors to the Vicars Cross Community, all the way back in 1966.

It’s fair to say that the ‘ole girl has had her fair share of ups and downs over the years and thanks to such a fantastic community of people we have all managed to see her through to this momentous occasion.

So this Saturday, December 10th 2016, we plan to raise a glass to everything that is fantastic about The Cenny with a double whammy of celebrations.

First up, of course, is the 50th Birthday party complete with live music from La Belle. But to make the night even extra special, we are delighted to also announce that CAMRA will be presenting the Vicars Cross Community with an award for becoming finalists in the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) first ever Pub Saving Award.

We are absolutely thrilled with this National Pub Saving Award, and while we are delighted for the winners, ‘Save the Drovers’ campaign in Dorset, we couldn’t be happier that the exceptional hard work of literally hundreds of VX residents is being recognised for the monumental achievement that it is.

To quote the CAMRA Press release:

“Campaigners in Chester who saved a valued local threatened with closure have become finalists in the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) first ever Pub Saving Award.

The Centurion pub faced sudden closure when Admiral Taverns sold it to a property developer in October 2014 with the intention of demolishing the pub to build a new care home. The pub, which was built as a community local on a housing estate fifty years ago, has provided a hub for the community for many years.

CAMRA was particularly impressed by how the Centurion Community Action Group (CCAG), with the support of the local CAMRA branch, banded together to raise a huge number of objections to the plans, persuading the local Council to refuse the application. The decision was appealed to the Planning Inspectorate but ultimately upheld, giving the campaigners a chance to bid for the pub themselves.

In the space of a fortnight, the community raised a staggering £21,000 to pay for three months’ rent in advance and are now running the pub under a 12 month lease with the hopes of purchasing it in September 2017.

The Pub Saving Award was launched by CAMRA this year to recognise communities who have successfully rescued local pubs from closure. The Centurion Community Action Group will be presented with an award on the 10th December at 8:00 pm at an event open to the media.”

So make sure you head to The Cenny on Saturday night for 7pm to celebrate your invaluable contribution to keeping our 50 year old pub up and running – and you get to see our fab Christmas Tree hurrah!!

BrightLife – Tuesday 22nd November, 2pm – 4pm at The Centurion Pub

A Big Thank You!

Now that we’ve all managed to get over very hectic but very fun Halloween and Bonfire weekends it’s time to doth our caps to the ladies and gentlemen of the community that gave their time and energy into turning the Cenny into the perfect place to host the first community bonfire for five years!

For the regular Centurion goers out there, you may have noticed how fantastic the outside space is looking, not least in part due to the phenomenal work carried out on the fences around the pub.

So in no particular order, as everybody made a valuable contribution, the Centurion Community Action Group Committee (yes, we know how long-winded that is!) would like to thank Ian Cook for managing the overall project along with Phil Roberts, Nigel Jones, Geoff Pritchard, Melvin Owen, Dianne and her hubby for all their hard work.

And of course, as an army doesn’t march on an empty stomach, thanks also goes to Jamie and Arthur for supplying the much needed cups of tea and pies!

And lastly, a big shout out to Chris Oxterby for his continued work and help tending the hedges and keeping them tidy.

So with all of the fencing and hedges taken care of we were able to hold a fantastic bonfire and fireworks display that couldn’t possibly have come together without the tremendous efforts of so many people who pitched in to get it going.

But what’s a bonfire without a Guy?? So three cheers to Carol Powis for raiding Brian’s wardrobe and stitching Guy Fawkes together and to Kelly Powis for keeping us all fed on the night as she tended the hotdog and hotpot stand.

Once again another huge community effort and if you’d like to see some of the snapshots taken on the evening just head to our facebook page at Centurion Community Action Group

Epic Halloween Weekend at the Cenny

In what can only be described as a success of epic proportions, our Halloween weekend at The Centurion saw the pub absolutely jam packed – inside and out.

Starting on Friday afternoon, what seemed like hundreds of little monsters, flocked to the pub for The Kids Halloween Disco. Huge thanks goes out to our resident DJ, Albert, who filled the two hour party with games, prizes and spooky music that had the whole pub hopping.

And while we thought we had catered enough food for the hungry masses, we sincerely didn’t anticipate the vast numbers of families who turned up so apologies if you were left hotdogless on Friday!

In hindsight we shouldn’t have been surprised that once again the good people of Vicars Cross (and further afield) came together in the best possible way to celebrate and support it’s local Community Pub.

Cue Saturday and it was time to do it all over again except this time for the grown ups who turned out in their droves, all costumed up and ready to have a great time. Alex and Carol winners of the Halloween fancy dress and they each walked away with a £25 drinks voucher for their trouble.

Sadly no one won Open The Box or Higher or Lower therefore, next week the prize will be £100 in the box and £60 for higher or lower.

And to round off this incredible weekend, on Sunday night we saw Tony’s General Knowledge Quiz break it’s record for the number of teams in attendance. A whopping 15 teams took part in Tony’s Halloween themed quiz last night with Tony saying “No words can say what I feel.

“You are all just fantastic and the 15 teams raised £73 raised for our good causes.

“As always it’s a big THANK YOU from me.”

To round off the Spooky Spectacular weekend, Tony will be back on Sunday night, 30th October, for a special Halloween themed quiz. With 13 teams in attendance last week, Tony’s quiz is hugely popular so come enjoy the atmosphere and round off your weekend with some puzzlers and pints from 8pm!

We’ve been very busy bees over the last few days decorating the pub and would like to thank everybody who came along for their help.

With more balloons, streamer, skeletons and bunting than you can shake a spooky stick at, it’s promising to be a fantastic weekend for everybody who can come along and join us.
