Ceni Argyle 4-3 Billy Hawks
Ceni Argyles season is officially up and stumbling after an excellent start with few qualms soon turned to relieved faces and sweaty palms.
A tumultuous off-season had culminated in a late affiliation with Hampshire FA, meaning the first round clash with Billy Hawks in the Junior Cup would be the new-look Ceni squads first test.
And the Ceni were, in fact, good value for their 4-3 win, although letting a 4-nil lead slip to just a single goal took the gloss off what was an otherwise impressive performance.
The Ceni's midfield ran the show for much of the first half; some smooth link up play between Boycey and John allowing Danny to slot home from just inside the box for Argyles first goal.
John then scored 3 goals of such decadence and magnitude that i can't even begin to describe/remember them, so we'll just give the plaudits to both himself, and his tireless strike partner Jason Quick.
An unexplainable capitulation in the last ten minutes let the Billy's back into the match courtesy of 1: a good finish, 2: some unremarkable defending, and 3: a goalkeeping clanger involving Graham Symes, a pea-roller of a shot, and a fair amount of confusion as the ball nonchalantly rolled under his torso and into a grateful net.
The final whistle soon went however, and the Argyle were home and dry.
Manager Graham Symes tried to sum up the match:
"Well, from where i was standing we did some...good things...out there today...Errr so...in conclusion...played one, won one, job done".
Wise words. Lets hope the rest of the seasons football is a bit more coherent than his English.
